The book Common Diversities for the first time provides an empirical and scientific exploration of how their youth affects 2nd- and 3rd-generation Filipin@s in particular. It is a collection of essays by authors from Austria and Germany, celebrating the 10th anniversary of Sentro in Vienna. Contributions in German and English span subjects like migration, identity or discrimination.
In searching for their identity, some of the authors find that 2nd- or 3rd-generation Filipin@s are different from their immigrant parents, but they are also not quite like the members of the dominant culture in the countries they grew up in. Understanding that they may be somewhat odd, perhaps even unique, leads to the concession that they can only truly be themselves if they are also an integral part of the society.
The collective volume was released in 2022 and edited by Arlene D. Casteñada (the Sentro’s founder) und Ralph Chan (doctoral student of sociology at the University of Vienna). It is available via regiospectra and can be delivered to Switzerland.
