Filipina Activist to Give Guest Lecture at University of Zurich

lb. On November 28, 2024, Philippine indigenous activist Joan Carling will give a guest lecture at the University of Zurich. She is one of this year’s recipients of the Right Livelihood Award, also known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize”, for “empowering indigenous voices in the face of global ecological collapse and their leadership in defense of people, land and culture.”

Joan Carling has been campaigning for the rights of indigenous people on the northern Philippine island of Luzon since the 1980s whilst opposing state-sponsored projects that endanger the local population. In addition to the numerous key roles she has played in various international institutions, she has also received several awards. In 2018, she was labeled a terrorist by the Philippine government at the time.

The Right Livelihood Centre in Zurich acts as a hub connecting Right Livelihood, the University of Zurich and the Swiss public. Since 2008, they have been organizing annual guest lectures in collaboration with the Master of Advanced Studies in Applied History department in order to connect sterling personalities with an interested audience.

We are counting on many from our community to show Joan Carling their support and appreciation. Registration via the organizers is required.
