Of Children who Lose their Parents

Sheree Domingo’s Comic «Ferngespräch» tells about the Consequences of Migration

lb. «Global care chain» describes the phenomenon when duties of familial care are shared across borders. Even back in 2016, The New Yorker wrote about women who leave their children in the care of their grandmothers in the Philippines in order to pursue jobs as nannies in New York. Three years later, Joanne Ramos’ debut novel was set against this backdrop in The Farm (published by Penguin) and in the same year, the Swiss Publisher EDITION MODERNE released the Comic Ferngespräch by Sheree Domingo, where this topos is transposed onto the European context. Domingo’s story tells of a Filipina nurse working in a German old people’s home while her own mother is dying back home. The drawings in fine pastel colors convey the paradoxes of our time from a child’s-eye-view – all of which the author elaborates on in more detail at the very end of the book.
