With an estimated 10 million people, the Filipino diaspora is considered as one of the largest and most spread-out diasporas in the world. People who identify as Filipino, Filipina or Filipinx also make up a significant part of the local population in Switzerland, where they may choose anything from reaffirming their heritage culture to redefining their identity.

As generations of Filipinos settle outside the Philippines and cultures continue to mix, the questions at hand are indeed: what is it that makes something or someone Filipino? How has what we think of as «Philippine culture» prevailed or evolved amidst competing influences throughout the ages? What is the perception of Filipinas and Filipinos from a Western gaze? And how do they adapt to or influence the societies they live in?

The invited keynote speakers for our second symposium will address these and other questions from a scientific point of view while our featured artists demostrate the evolution of cultural and artistic practices in works that are distinctly Filipino and yet decidedly avant-garde. Moreover, students from the University of Zurich will present their research tied to earliest connections between Zurich and Manila. Participants will also have ample opportunity to explore these questions in guided workshops.
